Description
John Harrington Stevens (1820-1900) was one of the earliest white settlers in the area that would ultimately become Minneapolis, Minnesota. He built a wood frame house near the Falls of St. Anthony in 1850 and would later serve in both the state’s Senate and House of Representatives. His home was moved several times and is still standing as a museum in the city’s Minnehaha Park.
Stevens saw the Twin Cities region experience a tremendous amount of change over the course of his lifespan, and he outlines many of his personal recollections in this attractive volume, published in 1890 by Marshall Robinson. In the 430+ pages, he discusses his time with the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War, the composition of Fort Snelling, local Native American populations, economic growth and industry, political organization of early statehood, and much more; concluding a woodcut engraving reproducing Carver’s sketch of the Falls of St. Anthony from 1766.
