Description
This unusual and uncommon document registers the terms of a 1918 lease between the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad (part of the Pennsylvania Railroad) and the Maxwell Motor Car Company in Dayton, Ohio. Looking to create a new platform for an adjacent manufacturing building, Maxwell leased about 450 square feet of railroad property for a steal at $16/year. The document is signed by Ledyard Mitchell, president of the company, and is accompanied by two maps that outline the surrounding area near the corner of Bacon and Bainbridge Streets in Dayton.
The Maxwell Motor Car Company, founded in 1904, was an early American automobile manufacturer that aimed to produce reliable and affordable vehicles. It operated three plants across the Dayton area (including the one seen here). While initially financially successful, over-expansion and a slump in sales after World War I eventually led to Maxwell’s incorporation into the Chrysler Corporation in 1925.
