Description

Mechanicsburg (a borough of Harrisburg in Pennsylvania) got its name from a group who settled there to take up the trade of repairing Conestoga Wagons in the early 19th century. The town’s growth was further spurred by the regional development of the Cumberland Valley Railroad (CVRR) – an early U.S. railroad chartered in 1831.

The Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the CVRR in June of 1919, and this map shows the outcome of the acquisition two decades later, with the original name now labeled as a branch of the larger Penn RR network. The area in pink shows land owned by the railroad, and the lines traversing the city from 1902, 1919, and 1942 are individually labeled. “P.R.R. Property Conveyed to the U.S. Gov’t” is outlined in the center right, adjacent to the huge swathe of area organized as the U.S. Navy Supply Depot. Property owners, individual buildings, street names, and the angles of curves and grades are also shown within the image.

Published originally in June of 1942 by the Office of the Chief Engineer of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Philadelphia.
