During his inaugural parade in 1961, President John F. Kennedy remarked to Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg that the status of Pennsylvania Avenue (connecting the U.S. Capitol to the White House) was a ‘disgrace.’ It was this moment that prompted the President’s initiatives to revitalize the important thoroughfare, culminating in an official council that aimed to establish a ‘grand axis’ through the capital.
This is a gorgeous example copy of the council’s official report, lavishly published by the Government Printing Office (after Kennedy’s assassination) in 1964. The contents present a robust proposal for a complete overhaul of Pennsylvania Avenue. Recommendations for standardized architecture, a new, multi-lane roadway, subterranean parking spaces, and large outdoor spaces are all part of the plan, outlined via charts, illustrations, maps, and diagrams. Of particular interest is a large fold-out, offering an overview of the entire site plan.
