Description
Pebble Beach Golf Links opened in 1919, on the famous 17-mile drive of the Monterey Peninsula, as an amenity for guests of the nearby Hotel Del Monte. Designed by champion golfers Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, the course was structured to incorporate local geography and celebrate the beauty of the Pacific Coast. The first professional tournament held at Pebble Beach was the Monterey Peninsula Open in 1926, followed by its first major (the U.S. Amateur) in 1929. The recognition as a host course for the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament in 1947 cemented the links as one of the top in the nation.
This rare mid-century copper print block was used to replicate a map of the historic course, possibly as part of an event brochure, tournament program, or scorecard. Each of the 18 numbered holes is shown with an accompanying tee box and pin. Topography and hazards (trees, primarily) are depicted pictorially, while pleasure craft cruise the nearby yacht harbor. Undated, but the total yardage (6,667) and style of block indicate a probable date range of mid/late 1950s to early 1960s. Yardage was increased to over 6,800 for the 1972 U.S. Open.
