Description

This interesting map of the Mid-Atlantic presents Britain’s former American possessions in the midst of their transition into the United States. All major battles of the Revolutionary War took place within the borders of the image, which include portions of Canada and Georgia (seen via inset, upper left).

Rough topography is depicted pictorially and the course of the Ohio River, a critical means of transportation and military control, is clearly shown running through the center of the sheet. Numerous Native American villages and tribal lands are labeled – the indigenous peoples of America played a crucial role on both sides of the Revolutionary War.

The map was designed by John Cary (one of his earliest works), based on an earlier, larger map by the French cartographer Robert de Vaugondy. Published in London in 1782, before the Treaty of Paris (1783) officially recognized the Thirteen Colonies to be free and independent.
