This group of panoramic views was designed to illustrate the events that took place around Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tennessee in the fall of 1863. Confederate General James Longstreet was unsuccessful in his attempts to bottleneck the Union Army at Knoxville and secure eastern Tennessee.

The sheet was published by the United States War Department and issued as plate 130 in Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. The atlas was published in Washington, D.C. between 1891 and 1895 and contains some of the best near-contemporary maps of the Civil War.
