This engaging English-language tourist map of the Rhine offers an attractive overview of the river between the German cities of Cologne (top) and Mainz (bottom). Published in Cologne around 1910 by Hoursch & Bechstedt, the map reflects the enduring popularity of Rhine panoramas, which emerged as early as the 1820s as wealthy Europeans undertaking the Grand Tour sought attractive and informative souvenirs of their travels. Although this example is almost entirely in English, other versions were issued in German, French, Italian, and additional languages to accommodate the Rhine’s international tourist trade.
