Description
This marvelous illustrated view of the New York Zoological Park (today, the Bronx Zoo) was drawn by William Adickes and copyrighted/published in 1913 by E. Byron Baynes. The image presents the sprawling ~265-acre grounds in vibrant full color, emphasizing the lush greenery and numerous water features. Animal exhibits, guest amenities, and primary transportation routes are also labeled throughout. Crowds of eager patrons in the foreground give the map a surprisingly lifelike feel. The piece, also available in a puzzle format, was originally sold as a souvenir for 15 cents, according to the covers.
This may reflect a somewhat later printing date of 1915, as an excerpt from the 1914 Report of the New York Zoological Society indicates a higher original price;
“A panorama or bird’s eye view of the Park in perspective was issued and put on sale in June of this year. This view, which is 15×27 inches, was made in four colors, from an original drawing that required several months in preparation. The price at which it was offered (twenty-five cents) will probably be reduced next season, as the demand has not been up to our expectations.”
