Description

Richard Edes Harrison was a brilliant graphic artist and cartographer who was instrumental in helping to change the American perception of geography and space with the introduction of the Air Age. Distances between places had to be completely re-imagined with the development of aviation technology that facilitated the long-distance transportation of people and goods through the air.

This map, published in a 1936 issue of Fortune Magazine, uses a special projection, explained in the lower center, to facilitate that view. The image presents the current status of global airline operations, with Pan-American Airways as the clear forerunner among American carriers.

Other operators are also shown, including their routes and the composition of their fleets. Numerous annotations throughout provide fascinating context to the contemporary state of the aviation industry, such as the need to out-bid dogsled teams for mail contracts in Alaska.
