Description
Beginning approximately 20 years after the conclusion of the 1967 Arab–Israeli War, the First Palestinian Intifada was a series of sustained mass protests against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Women played an underappreciated role in sustaining the Palestinian momentum, including forming ‘human shields between the youths and Israeli soldiers’ (Sabbagh).
This poster was drawn by artist Miranda Bergman and published by the Union of Palestinian Women’s Association (U.P.W.A.) in 1989. It is a detail from a mural project carried out by a team of artists which included Susan Greene, Dina Redman, and Marlene Tobias. The original work can be found in the Popular Arts Center in Ramallah, Palestine.
