Description
This impressive compilation of five different maps was issued in German, probably in late 1914 or early 1915, based on the depiction of the fronts and the high number of apparently neutral countries (white). Territory under control of the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire) are highlighted in green, while those of the Triple Entente (France, the United Kingdom, and Russia) are shown in pink.
Fortified cities are represented with stars, often with additional bastions noted in the immediate vicinity. The areas around heavily defended cities like Verdun, Arras, and Cambrai would ultimately become bloody killing fields. Five different perspectives of the conflict are shown – a global overview, the Western Front, the English Channel, South Africa, and the border between Iran, Turkey, and Russia.
Published in Vienna circa 1914 by Brand & Company. The ‘Senefelder’ printing referred to the lower left probably refers to the lithographic process by which the map was made.
