Description

Hang ten with this fun pictorial map of Waikiki Beach issued by the Outrigger Canoe Club, probably in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The group was founded in 1908 so that “men and boys could ride upright on the crest of waves” and is credited with popularizing the sports of surfing and outrigger canoeing. It also claims to be the home of beach volleyball, though that activity is not shown in the image.

Numerous other recreational activities – including aquaplaning – are shown, in addition to locations of interest and cultural features like the pale-skinned ‘Malihini’ (newcomer). The anonymous ‘map’ was likely issued to encourage the sale of bonds for the construction of a new clubhouse, which was completed in 1941. Blank on verso.
