Description

This vibrant backyard woodcut engraved scene was based on a drawing by the talented Thomas Nast and published in the May 18, 1878 issue of Harper’s Weekly. One can almost hear the group of excited dogs in the foreground, barking at the myriad of sights and sounds from the neighbor’s back porch.

Possibly two generations of rambunctious children can be seen banging on pots, dropping shoes over the fence, crying, and making funny faces. A contented matriarch looks out the window, while father can be seen quietly reading just inside the window. An eminently relatable scene, even almost 150 years later!
