Description

This detailed street plan of Orlando and the surrounding area was originally copyrighted in 1958 by Vaughn & Company and Don Johnson (relationship between the two unclear). This later edition, issued in October of 1959, was sponsored and published by the Greater Orlando Chamber of Commerce. Expanding interstate infrastructure connects the city’s rapidly growing suburbs, fueled by the growing aerospace and tourism industries.

Signs of civic progress like schools, parks, hospitals, and public utilities are noted in the legend. Dozens of lakes are brightly colored and labeled – endless opportunities for swimming, fishing, water sports, and more. Underlying the various civic amenities and recreational amusements was the harsh reality of the Cold War. Civil Defense Escape Routes are prominently noted with the organization’s symbol. A comprehensive street index, map of Orange County, Florida, and descriptions of major points of interest are provided on the verso.
