Description
Vienna’s Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) opened southwest of the city in 1874 to serve the rapidly growing and industrializing population. It is renowned both for its vast scale (one of the largest in Europe) and for the many famous figures interred there, including Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms.
This folding map presents a mere quarter of the sprawling cemetery. Printed green color highlights occupied crypts and common (shaft) graves – the most desirable areas were apparently towards the center, with vast swathes of vacant plots hugging the perimeter. An inset in the upper right offers a small-scale view of the entire grounds (about 200 hectares at the time of printing).
Published in Vienna in 1900 by Stockinger & Morsack, self-described ‘Grave Surveyors’. The year prior to printing, Johann Strauss II (the King of Waltz) was buried in Section 32. The map, personalized on the front cover, is one of several different funerary supplies offered by the firm. Numerous advertisements on the verso, mostly for monumental masonry.
