OPNS Overlay Map Italy [45th Infantry Division in Sicily]

Attempting to cut off the Germans from their withdrawal from Sicily.

This ephemeral printed overlay appears to have been issued by Lt. Col. Ralph Krieger, commander of the 1st Battalion of the 157th Infantry Regiment during the Sicily campaign of World War II. The date of August 15th, 1943 indicates the sheet was created for use in the attempt to cut off the German withdrawal from the island.

Operating as part of the 45th Infantry Division, the 157th Regiment departed from San Stefano on August 15th on an amphibious mission to Midazzo with the hopes of preventing the enemy retreat to the mainland. Objectives for three different battalions are noted after landing at their respective beaches. The letters refer to prearranged reference points, according to the text in the lower right. Further annotations identify restrictions for supporting artillery and naval fire – likely in an effort to avoid hitting friendly units.
