Official History of the War – Naval Operations Vol. III (MAPS)

Collection of WWI naval maps formerly in the Ministry of Defense.

This detailed collection of military maps and battle plans was originally issued as part of the multi-volume work, History of the Great War Naval Operations by Sir Julian Corbett. An eminent British naval historian, Corbett was commissioned to begin the enormous project near the outset of the conflict, allowing the first volumes to be published as early as 1920. This map accompaniment to Volume III was published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in London in 1923, shortly after Corbett’s death.

Naval engagements large and small are cataloged across forty-six folding charts. British submarine operations in the Sea of Marmara, the Battle of Kut, the Lowestoft Raid, and the torpedoing of H.M.S. Triumph are just a few examples. Over half of the contents (30+ maps) are dedicated to outlining the confusing events of the two-day Battle of Jutland, the largest naval conflict of the war and the only clash between the iconic battleships of the British and German navies.
