Oceania and Malaysia

This informative map of Oceania, Australasia, and the East Indies was published by the Chicago firm of Rand McNally & Co. in 1905. The sheet captures the southwestern Pacific at a point when fluid colonial frontiers had hardened into permanent imperial borders. Bold color code highlights political affiliation, dividing the vast maritime region into a grid of British, German, French, Dutch, and American possessions. In doing so, the map reflects a purely Eurocentric view of ownership, completely glossing over the sovereignty of the indigenous populations who inhabited the islands.

The map provides an excellent snapshot of the region’s changing political landscape at the turn of the century. Australia is shown just four years after its unification as an independent Commonwealth. To the north, the southeastern portion of New Guinea is labeled as British New Guinea, capturing it in the exact year it was transferred to Australian control under the Papua Act of 1905. A distinct imperial boundary separates it from German New Guinea (Kaiser-Wilhelmsland) directly to the north—a territory Australia would later seize during World War I. Further west, the Dutch East Indies are depicted under consolidated colonial rule following decades of military campaigns in the outer islands.
