Description

The pictorial style of artist Don Bloodgood is immediately apparent when looking at this lovely map of the island of Oahu and Waikiki Beach. Clever use of primary colors, exaggerated details, and legible labels make for a pleasing overall look.

The top portion of the sheet shows the island of Oahu and prominently features the Koolau mountain range and other natural and man-made features. The bottom portion of the sheet, separated by a decorative floral border, provides a large scale look at Waikiki Beach. Illustrated figures, many humorous, can be seen on both images in a variety of activities, and locations of interest are brightly labeled in red and yellow. A final map, including all major Hawaiian islands, can be seen in the upper right corner.

The map was published in 1956 by Hawaiian Service in Honolulu using an offset lithography technique called “Mirro-Krome,” trademarked by the H.S. Crocker Co. (a postcard publisher) in San Francisco.
