Description

This neat pair of scenes presents two of Mexico City’s most iconic landmarks. The upper image show the Old Basilica of Guadalupe, constructed in 1709 but undergoing extensive renovations that were completed around the time of publication. Nearly 20 million pilgrims visit the site every year, surpassed only by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Immediately below is an image of Chapultepec, with the hilltop fortress functioning as the official residence of Mexico’s heads of state.

Engraved by Louis Auguste Sainson for inclusion in Dumont d’Urville’s Voyage pittoresque autour du monde.
