The Nintendo Entertainment System had been introduced in Japan as the Famicom (Family Computer) in 1983. It took three years, and several small test runs in major cities, for the console to see a full North American release. Once it hit the shelves, the NES became an immediate hit and continues in popularity to this day, with the recent release of the NES Classic console.
This promotional poster highlights some of the system’s most recognizable games when they just became available on the market for the first time. Many of the characters would go on to become legends in the video game pantheon – Mario Brothers, Samus Aran, Donkey Kong and Link, just to name a few.
