Description

This stark advertisement attempts to unveil the hypocrisy of war by contrasting the heroism of America’s youth with the realities of global conflict. The illustration of a disabled veteran, cheerfully begging on the street corner, elicits tremendous feelings of pity. Accompanying text provides examples of the justification used to entice such men to fight in the first place, calling them “victims of the greatest racket ever perpetuated upon decent people.”

The ad was part of a larger antiwar campaign promoted by Fortune and American Magazine on behalf of World Peaceways in New York. The image was painted by Albert Dorne.
