Description
This beautiful antique map of the Northern Hemisphere was engraved by Kirkwood and published in Edinburgh by John Thomson & Co. in 1814. The finely detailed engraving reflects the remarkable wave of late 18th- and early 19th-century voyages that progressively expanded European geographical knowledge of the frigid Arctic oceans and surrounding territories. The greatest hope of these expeditions, a shortened maritime waterway to the rich entrepots of Asia, is essentially all but a foregone conclusion, with the wall of ice surrounding the North Pole proving an insurmountable obstacle.
