Description

This map, marked RESTRICTED, was issued in June of 1943 by the United States Office of Strategic Services in preparation for the forthcoming invasion of Papua New Guinea by American and Australian forces. It provides a concise strategic overview of the Huon Peninsula, around Finschhafen, and details transportation routes, missions, plantations, villages, and landing fields.

A “reliability diagram” in the lower right shows that reliable reconnaissance surveys had been performed across only a fraction of the coastal area. This information would have been of vital importance in the upcoming Battle of Finschhafen, which took place between September and October of 1943 as part of the efforts to drive Japan from New Guinea.
