Description
The New York Zoological Society was established in 1895 with the intention of founding a local zoo to promote the study and preservation of wildlife. The resulting Bronx Zoo opened its doors less than four years later to resounding public acclaim.
This map was published by the society in 1907, less than 10 years after the zoo opened, and shows the extent of the ground adjacent to Pelham Avenue and Southern Boulevard. An accompanying index identifies over fifty separate exhibits; including the buffalo herd, tortoise yards and alligator pool.
