Description

This colorful stylized view shows New York City in 1674, shortly after the city and colony of New Netherlands were permanently ceded to the British by the Dutch in the Treaty of Westminster. Over thirty different historic locations of interest are numbered and identified in the upper right.

Visual elements such as the sailing ship (flying an American flag), costumed figures, and title cartouche reflect decorative map trends of the 17th and 18th centuries, but this is most certainly a mid-20th-century production. Signed in the lower right, C. Vardel.
