Description

This 1961 subway map of New York City reflects the redesign by George Salomon that was first adopted by the Transit Authority in 1958. Based on Berlin’s U-Bahn system, the image features prominent colors that distinguish the routes in operation of the three separate service divisions (Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation, Independent Subway System, and Interborough Rapid Transit Company).

Salomon’s recommendations for nomenclature updates were not adopted and the labels remain a bit cluttered and somewhat confusing. Forty-three places of interest, with their nearest stations, are located in the upper right.
