Description
All five boroughs are represented in this fun and colorful look at the route of the 1986 New York City Marathon. Icons of the city’s identity are proudly displayed along with representations of its history, diversity, and attitude. Signs of encouragement can be seen on rooftops, hanging from helicopters, and carried by cheering onlookers.
The men’s winner for the 1986 race was Italian Gianni Poli, with a time of 2:11.06. The women’s gold medal winner was Grete Waitz, from Norway, who had a time of 2:28.06. Prize money wasn’t added until 2001, so the victors took home only their medals and their pride.
The promotional poster was drawn by C. Hayes for the New York City Road Runners Club, the group that organizes the marathon.
