Description

This interesting guidebook, offering to show ‘New York City-At-A-Glance” was published locally by the Wehman Brothers in 1916. It focuses on the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx, offering a detailed directory of local businesses, a comprehensive street index, lists of attractions, and much more.

A double sided folding map is affixed to the back cover. It shows a simple street grid with an emphasis on transportation – notably ferry routes, rail lines, and depots. Piers along the East and Hudson Rivers are numbered individually.

Of particular interest is Number 54, opposite the United States Navy Yard. It was from here that the RMS Lusitania departed for Liverpool before being sunk by a German U-Boat in the waters off Britain in 1915. In 1916, the year of publication, German saboteurs blew up an ammunition dump off the coast of Jersey City on Black Tom Island. The year following, America entered the war on the side of the Entente.
