Description

A bright map hand colored by wards and drawn by the famous American cartographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell. It shows the city after a period of significant expansion on Manhattan Island and in nearby Brooklyn about a decade before it was annexed by the city. An inset map shows that the rapid development still had not yet reached upper Manhattan or the Washington Heights.

Rather than providing extensive detail on individual buildings, Mitchell instead opts to emphasize transportation routes throughout the city including roads, railways, ferry lanes, and ship docks. The buildings that are labeled are generally related to transportation or public interest, such as rail depots, City Hall, upscale hotels and post offices.
