Description

Beginning in 1938, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce began advertising the Cornhusker State as ‘America’s White Spot’, ostensibly due to its economically advantageous policies. Examples included no state tax, no income tax, and no bonded debt, as shown on this promotional label issued by the organization. The state borders are cleverly incorporated twice within the image.

Though it’s likely the advertising campaign didn’t intentionally include a racial component by choosing the slogan ‘America’s White Spot’, it certainly raises eyebrows to a 21st-century audience, especially given the complicated African-American history of places like Omaha and Lincoln.
