Description

This interesting print is a reminder of the close relationship between Britain and her navy. Officers ranking from mate to admiral are shown in full dress uniform, many sporting thick shoulder epaulets and nearly all wearing the standard bicorn hat. Sabers hanging in scabbards, glittering ribbons and medals and other accoutrements also distinguish one officer’s rank from another.

Issued in the September 12, 1857 issue of The Illustrated London News, shortly before victory was declared in the Crimean War.
