Description

“President De Gaulle, who claims that America is dominating NATO, has taken his nation out of the alliance. This has reduced the depth of Western Europe’s defensive wall”.

This informational poster map was created and published in Washington, D.C. in 1966 by the Civic Education Service as part of its Headline-Focus Wall Map series. The boldly colored image of Europe presents the weakened state of NATO (orange countries) after the (incomplete) French withdrawal in 1966.

The vibrant red of the Soviet Union includes a warning about the superiority in troop numbers over NATO members (4.5 million vs. 2.7 million). A text box in the upper right provides a brief history of the alliance, its organization, and a summary of the French complaints.
