Description

This fascinating Space Race classroom poster was prepared by the editors of Current Science and published in 1967 by American Education Publications of Columbus, Ohio. One side of the sheet presents the NASA moon map – a vibrant geological map of the lunar surface created using data and photographs from the Ranger, Orbiter, and Surveyor spacecraft. A variety of surface materials are shown and described in the key along the bottom. The verso is a compilation of nine images captured by Orbiter 1, Surveyor 1, and Surveyor 3. Surveyor 1 was the first American probe to make a soft landing on the moon (four months after the Soviet Luna 9).
