Description
“This map was compiled for the Hudson River Night Line to help the motorists who use the boats to reach their destination without delay. The map covers a large area, including thirteen states and two Canadian provinces, and outlines all the main traveled highways, all of which are well surfaced.” – Text, lower center.
This interesting tourist map of the northeastern United States and the most populated parts of Canada was issued as a guide to guests aboard the Hudson River Night Line. Bringing their cars on board the ferry allowed passengers to ‘save a day’ of driving during the overnight trip from New York to Albany and Troy. Between the two points, many of the nation’s finest summer resorts, historic sites, urban centers, and vacation destinations are an easy drive along well-surfaced highways. Summaries of various regions and recommended routes are provided on the verso.
The map and suggested weekend motor trips were compiled by O.M. Wells in 1929. Designed and printed in Long Island City by the Offset Gravure Corporation on behalf of the Hudson River Night Line. According to a blog post on the subject, the overnight cruise was a luxurious spectacle aboard a ‘floating palace’, compared to the more popular (and affordable) Hudson Day Line trips.
