Description

This rather straightforward road map of the Southwestern United States showcases the embryonic network of auto trails stretching from Chicago to Salt Lake City. Before a coherent network of numbered highways was introduced in 1926, local organizations would sponsor and promote specific routes, often transcending state lines. Over thirty such highways are identified throughout the image, with a helpful alphabetical index in the lower left listing their respective endpoints from the Arrowhead Trail to the Yellowstone Highway.

Copyrighted in 1918 by the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce. The construction of the Pikes Peak Highway in 1915 brought a new opportunity to capitalize on local motor tourism, a rapidly growing industry.
