Description

Though the name generally means a principal vein of ore or silver, the California Mother Lode specifically references a long alignment of gold deposits in the Sierra Nevada discovered during the state’s Gold Rush. The 100+ mile stretch of ground was heavily mined during the 19th and early 20th century and ultimately yielded over 100 million troy ounces of gold.

This atlas, published by the U.S.G.S. in 1900, shows the Mother Lode in its final prosperous decades and includes extensive descriptive text about the mining history, geology, and physical composition of the area. Several types of maps emphasize topography, mining claims, economic geology and structural cross-sections.
