Description
The iconic poster for Moscow on the Hudson (1984) was an unmistakable homage to Saul Steinberg’s celebrated 1976 New Yorker cover, View of the World from 9th Avenue. Reversing Steinberg’s famously myopic New York-centric perspective, the poster depicts Manhattan in the foreground with Europe and Moscow receding into the distance. Unfortunately for Columbia Pictures, the similarities extended well beyond the underlying concept – the composition, artistic style, and numerous visual details were deemed substantially similar by a federal court, which ruled in Steinberg’s favor in a landmark copyright infringement case.
