Description

“A major goal of the United States and Soviet Union space programs is to land men on the moon in this decade. Working toward that goal, both nations have sent unmanned spacecraft to photograph and test the moon’s surface. This moon chart shows all major craters, mountains, valleys and so-called ‘seas.’ Also shown are landing sites of important lunar probes to date.” – Text, upper left.

This striking photographic relief map of the moon’s surface was published around 1967 by C.S. Hammond & Co. of Maplewood, New Jersey. The Space Race was near its highest level of intensity, though the Apollo 1 fire and Soyuz 1 crash forced both countries to temporarily pause missions and re-evaluate equipment design. The poster is accompanied by its original folder and a promotional flyer for Destination MOON at the Cincinnati Planetarium.
