Description

The retail juggernaut of Montgomery Ward & Co. was founded in Chicago as a dry goods store in 1872. The concept of a mail order catalog quickly took off, and by the late 19th century Montgomery Ward (along with rival Sears) were issuing volumes advertising over 30,000 items.

This map was issued by the firm in conjunction with the 1893 Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago’s Jackson Park. The double sided image shows a complete plan of the fair grounds and adjacent Midway Plaisance; labeling individual buildings and exhibits. Text encourages the audience to visit Montgomery Ward’s exhibits at the Transportation and Agricultural buildings or to purchase the aforementioned catalog, The Buyer’s Guide, for 15 cents.

The opposite side presents a map of Chicago’s Loop showing various transportation routes to the fairgrounds, as well as an image of the Montgomery Ward & Co. storefront on Michigan Avenue. The original paper covers are intact and advertise other amenities provided by the store during the fair season; including an opportunity for a free catalog, parcel checking, and the use of reading, writing or retiring rooms.
