Description
As an early member of the Cowboy Artists of America, Irvin “Shorty” Shope was uniquely poised to capture the essence of the West in this lovely pictorial map of his home state of Montana. After intermittent years on and off the range, he graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Montana at the age of 35 and worked as a commercial artist for the rest of his life.
Shope’s lifelong love for the West is evident on this map, drawn the year after graduation and published the following year (1937) by the Montana Chamber of Commerce. Numerous pictorial vignettes and accompanying text show historical events and sites throughout the state. The legend identifies the tracks of 13 prominent routes from Lewis and Clark to the modern state highway system, while scenes on the frontier anchor each corner of the image. Summarized under the title as “a one page history dedicated to the Old Timers.”

Condition Description: Faint creasing along originally issued fold lines. Small damp stains at the center of each edge just enter the image. Faint toning around the outer edge of the sheet, consistent with age. Very good overall.
