This colorful cartoon map of Milpitas, California, was created in 1989 by City Design of Pleasanton. The contributing artists are pictured in the upper right, enjoying the fruits of their labor while riding in a limousine! Their work reflects the commercial optimism of the late 1980s, riding the wave of Silicon Valley’s extraordinary growth. Dozens of businesses, large and small, are illustrated and labeled, often accompanied by caricatures of their owners. Restaurants, retailers, professional services, hotels, and more reflect a robust and diverse local economy.
Most structures were likely sketched individually on site before the final composition was assembled and connected by a stylized road network. The result is both a useful snapshot of late-1980s Milpitas and an exuberant piece of local advertising art, capturing the businesses and personalities of the city at the height of Silicon Valley’s boom.
