Scarce Estonian military map of Tartu published during the Interwar Period.

This detailed topographic map, issued at a scale of 1:25,000, covers a large area around the Estonian city of Tartu. The nation had obtained its independence from Soviet Russia less than a decade prior to publication (after WWI) and the image reflects significant postwar suburban growth for the city on the banks of the Emajogi River. Important buildings like the aerodrome, barracks, radio station, and train depot are labeled. A network of post roads and railways connects the metropolis the surrounding countryside, where small symbols identify local industries like mills and farmsteads.

The map was drawn by A. Villard using topographic data collected by Estonian soldiers, credited in the lower left margin. Printed by the Estonian State Publishing House (Riigi Trükikoda) in 1927. A rubber stamp in the lower right corner indicates this example was collected by the Army Map Service during World War II, probably as part of captured German cartographic information.
