Description
Texas was among the first states to formally introduce a numbered naming system to its road network. These early highways were largely superseded by the national methodology officially established in 1926, making this pocket map an uncommon example of the short-lived arrangement.
The image shows both the state highways and the various auto trails (generally sponsored by private organizations), with the latter adjacent to their respective road markings in the upper right. Scores of towns are carefully labeled amid Paved & Hard Surfaced Roads (solid) and Other Thoroughfares (cased).
Published in Denver by the Clason Map Company in 1924 (undated, but the key can be used to determine the year of issue). The front cover notes this example was distributed compliments of Roth’s Brothers’ Garage, located in San Antonio. Their motto was “We Treat You White.”

Condition Description: Single-sided map folded and affixed to (small) original stiff paper wraps. An arrow written in old ink in the lower center. Some light marginal soiling and wear on the covers, consistent with age. Staining in the upper left, were affixed to the covers. Good to very good condition overall.
