Description

This colorful postwar world map was published around 1952 by Rand McNally & Company to promote a commercial partnership between Walt Disney Productions and Vicks. The latter company had recently introduced its own brand of cough syrup and was looking to gain market share by appealing to kids and parents alike. Disney, keenly interested in opening an amusement park, was also amenable to alternative sources of revenue during a financially stressful period.

The map, press card, and press badge could all be obtained for just a quarter and a Vicks cough syrup box top! The eye-catching sheet presents a typical political overview of the world, noting China’s annexation of Tibet and Libya’s recent independence, but Korea remains a unified (albeit conflicted) peninsula. Several of Disney’s most popular characters are enjoying the scenery, such as Minnie flaunting her blood diamonds in South Africa and Goofy ice-skating in the Arctic Circle. The decorative border also features the iconic portraits of Mickey, Dumbo, Pluto, and more.
