Description

Take a step back in time and enjoy a leisurely stroll down Chicago’s famous Michigan Avenue during the 1880s. The view shows the street looking south from Van Buren, with a row of stately commercial buildings and townhomes on the right. To the left is an early depiction of Lake Park, renamed Grant Park in 1901. The grounds would continue to be expanded into the 1890s by pushing additional landfill into Lake Michigan.

The engraved and hand colored aquatint print was created by Raoul Varin and published in Chicago by A. Ackerman & Sons, Inc. in 1931. Varin (1865-1943), a French watercolor artist, created a series of 30+ Chicago views depicting both contemporary and historical scenes. Signed by the artist in the lower right margin and numbered 109/125 in the lower left.
