Description

This is an extensive chart outlining individual biological components and their roles in chemical reactions within a cell. The legend in the lower right explains how each color represents the pathway of a different molecular structure. It also outlines the compartmentation of the two processes shaded in light blue, creation of ATP and photosynthesis, which are defined as “the backbone of metabolism.”

In many ways, this map shows far more information about living beings on Earth than any creation from the field cartography. It was designed by Donald E. Nelson of the University of Leeds and Sigma for the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2000.
