Description
This simple overview of the V Corps Artillery during WWII understates the intense action experienced by the unit during its campaign across Europe. The experiences of the D-Day Landings, the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, linking with the Red Army, and the liberation of concentration camps are all captured by simple corps symbols and place names, overlaid by a thick red line slicing across the theater.
Surrounding the primary map are the various field artillery battalions and command groups that comprised the V Corps Artillery, under the command of General Charles Helmick. Names and signatures of each contributing unit reflect an egalitarian nature that is unusual in such commemorative publications.
The ‘Merry Christmas’ at the top is also of interest, and reflects the optimism (forced or otherwise) with which the corps proceeded through the final months of the war.
