Medieval Famine Hovers Over All Europe
“Western Hemisphere Last Resort for Starving Millions”

Description
This bleak world map was published as part of the July 20, 1940 edition of the San Francisco News. Three different shades highlight generalized wartime food availability (prospective shortage, doubtful supply, prospective surplus) across large swathes of territory. Text and small vignettes outline major foodstuffs produced in each region.
The bright pink of the Western Hemisphere presumably offers a beacon of hope to the rest of the world, though the potential for famine in China and Russia is obviously underappreciated. An accompanying story by John Thompson, News Foreign Editor, describes the causes of the food shortage, the importance of the Balkans to German food security, and the success of the British blockade.
